Jens von Bergmann holds undergraduate degrees in Physics and Computer Sciences and a PhD in Mathematics. He taught for several years at the University of Calgary, University of Notre Dame and Michigan State University before founding MountainMath to work on his passion of data analysis and visualization. MountainMath has focused on transparent and reproducible analysis and data workflows, as well as building and maintaining tools like CensusMapper to make data more accessible, and open source libraries like ‘cancensus' and related R packages to facilitate working with data from Statistics Canada and other sources.

Mat Burke, Director of Sales, Softlanding

Mat is a passionate sales and strategy specialist with a 20-year history in the Vancouver technology industry. Arron McCurdy, Senior Manager, Data and Analytics, City of Vancouver

Arron is the Director of Data, Analytics and Strategic Programs in Technology Services at the City of Vancouver with direct oversight of the development of a technology focused product management discipline, Technology Services’ Project Management Office (PMO) that oversees the planning and delivery of Technology Services’ annual technology plan, the design and oversight of the Enterprise Data & Analytics program (including the Open Data program) as well as data and integration services. Prior to joining the City of Vancouver in 2016, he worked in a number of project and product oriented roles for a global financial services company, including management of the development of internet and mobile banking offerings.

Soyean Kim, Leader, Research and Analytics, Technical Safety BC

Soyean Kim is a professional statistician (P.STAT) who is the chair of Accreditation Committee at Statistical Society of Canada. She currently leads a team of data scientists at Technical Safety BC, a safety regulator in Canada. Her key contribution includes advancing ethics roadmap in predictive system and deployment of AI and machine learning to help safety inspection process. Her previous leadership roles include her tenure at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Fortis as a rate design manager.

She is an advocate for “Data for Good” and a speaker on the topic of real world applications of AI. Her latest speaking engagement includes AI ethics in safety at Harvard Berkman, PAPIs in London, UK which is a series of international AI conferences, and BC Tech Summit in Vancouver.

Karen Parker, Program Manager, Business Analytics, Analytics Centre of Excellence in Financial & Corporate Services, Edmonton

Karen Parker is the City of Edmonton’s Manager of Business Analytics. She oversees the City of Edmonton data science and analytics team, which focuses on solving city problems using data. Karen has been instrumental in advocating for better use of data both within the City of Edmonton organization and for its citizens. She has created multiple tools to make open data more accessible, most recently of note the Kids Map of Edmonton.

Prior to joining the City of Edmonton, Karen worked as a business analyst in the software consulting industry. This experience, combined with an education background in Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction, has left her not only with a keen understanding of the technology of data, but also the ability to translate it into usable visualizations and to educate others about it.

Tara Mulrooney, CIO, Alberta Energy Regulator

Tara Mulrooney is an innovative and results driven executive who is currently leading the digital transformation for the Alberta Energy Regulator as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). She started her career in the software industry transitioning to public sector where she has leveraged her industry expertise to transform business. Tara has recently been recognized as Canadas’ CIO of the Year by the CIO Association of Canada. Tara and her team invented the renowned “OneStop” risk-based regulatory platform, a technology stack built on enterprise-class technologies that automates many processes and provides three user personas (citizen, staff, and industry) to a global audience. Mulrooney says the platform has become the “digital cockpit” that is used to manage the organization and its mandate.
